Politics
Mostly in their own words.
- Institute for Global Communication "The
Institute for Global Communications (IGC) is a nonprofit organization that provides
alternative sources of information as well as online access and comprehensive Internet
services for progressive individuals and organizations."
- Economic Policy Institute "The Economic Policy
Institute is a nonprofit, nonpartisan think tank that seeks to broaden the public debate
about strategies to achieve a prosperous and fair economy." Check
out the "State of Working America" section.
- Center on Budget and Policy Priorities "The
Center on Budget and Policy Priorities is a nonpartisan research organization and policy
institute that conducts research and analysis on a range of government policies and
programs, with an emphasis on those affecting low- and moderate-income people."
- ZNet Sponsored by Z magazine; excellent discussion
forums. "ZNet is a community of people concerned about social change and eager to
learn from, enjoy, and work with one another. It is an interactive home base for
progressives, a launch pad for research and study, and an interactive center for
exchanging information, developing ideas, and jointly pursuing shared agendas."
- The American Prospect "The aim of The
American Prospect is to contribute to a renewal of America's democratic traditions by
presenting a practical and convincing vision of liberal philosophy, politics, and public
life. We publish articles for the general reader that attempt to break through
conventional understanding and creatively reframe public questions. Ours is not a magazine
of complaint, of angry gestures, or of private irritations. It's a magazine of public
ideas, firmly committed -- however unfashionably -- to a belief in public improvement.
America can do much good, and it can do much better."
- Mother Jones Magazine "The Foundation for
National Progress is a nonprofit activist organization dedicated to advancing progressive
causes through media. In addition to publishing Mother Jones and the MoJo Wire, the
Foundation's projects include training interns in investigative journalism, and the Mother
Jones International Fund for Documentary Photography."
- Democratic Socialists of America "The Democratic
Socialists of America (DSA) is the largest socialist organization in the United States,
and the principal U.S. affiliate of the Socialist International. DSA's members are
building progressive movements for social change while establishing an openly socialist
presence in American communities and politics."
- Critiques of Libertarianism
Mike Huben's exhaustive site of critiques of Libertarianism. This is no mean
feat, given that the number of libertarians willing to mouth off on internet news and
discussion groups seems to exceed their actual number in the population. I think I
remember reading somewhere that many computer industry types tend to be of this
persuasion, or chiefly Republican. Lack of social skills and social imagination may
account for the number.
- Socialist.org An Australian directory of
democratic socialist parties and organizations throughout the world.
"Socialist.org is a site dedicated to providing information about the
democratic socialist movement on the internet."
- Bay Area Progressive Directory
"A guide to about 1000 organizations in the San Francisco Bay Area of interest to
progressive activists."
